Team drops Joe Wieland from 40-man roster, outrighting him to Class AAA Tacoma
OAKLAND, Calif. — The Mariners made a minor roster move Monday, removing right-hander Joe Wieland from the 40-man roster and outrighting him to Class AAA Tacoma.
That leaves the Mariners’ 40-man roster with an open space. There was no immediate corresponding move, but it gives Seattle an open spot if a move is needed.
To outright Wieland, the Mariners had to place him on waivers and have him pass through the remaining 29 teams without being claimed. The Mariners picked an opportune time to do so with Wieland struggling in his past three outings, giving up 22 runs on 24 hits in three starts that lasted a combined four innings.
