My favorite absurdist statement to describe the importance of spring training numbers is to describe the numbers being penciled into the box score in invisible ink. Today, much more than just statistical importance seemed to fade. After getting excited about the lineup of mostly major league level players and a probable pitchers list with a similar feel, and seeing that today’s game would be broadcast on the Mariners website, I quickly found Surprise beyond the name of the town that hosted today’s game. The lineup card filled with players that could easily pass for a regular season roster had lulled me into forgetting that this was still in fact a spring training game.
