Mariners lose a catcher and a bid for series sweep

Backup catcher Steve Clevenger broke his right hand on a foul tip in Wednesday’s 8-1 loss to the Pirates at Safeco Field. It left the Mariners’ bench in thin shape.

The Mariners lost another game and it wasn’t close — an 8-1 drubbing to the Pirates where Wade Miley looked like a pitcher fresh of the disabled list, Donn Roach didn’t look much better in immediate relief and the infield committed three errors.

And in the process of falling back to .500 at 39-39 on Wednesday night and failing to gain a little traction, the Mariners also lost backup catcher Steve Clevenger for the foreseeable future with a fracture in his right hand.
