Mariners: Ichiro plucked from the field, placed in front office

It appears we've seen Ichiro take the field for the last time.

Effective Thursday, the 44-year-old outfielder is the special assistant to the chairman for the Seattle Mariners.

He will continue to work with the team at home and on the road to assist the team with outfield play, baserunning and hitting and offer mentorship to players and staff, according to a statement from the Mariners released Thursday morning.

Ichiro will no longer serve on the active roster.

"We want to make sure we capture all of the value that Ichiro brings to this team off the field," General Manager Jerry Dipoto said in a written statement.
