On November 14, 1969, Apollo 12, the second moon mission, took off from Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida. Apollo 12 was meant to be an easy mission, following up the historic Apollo 11 landing from just a few months ago. It was rainy day, with a cold front approaching from the north, bringing scattered showers and thunderstorms. At the time of launch there was no rain, and NASA deemed it safe to launch.
They were wrong.
36 seconds after lift off, and then , Apollo 12 passed through the thunderstorm above, and lightning struck the rocket twice, following the exhaust plume all the way down to the tower.
