With the Major League Baseball deadline to sign 2018 draft picks to contracts looming on Friday, the Mariners were able to reach an agreement with Cal Raleigh, their third-round selection out of Florida State, late Thursday evening.
Raleigh, a switch-hitting catcher with power potential, was the Mariners’ only remaining selection, who was expected to sign and hadn’t done so. But they were able to finalize a deal with Raleigh’s agent Scott Boras. General manager Jerry Dipoto confirmed that Raleigh had taken and passed his physical at the team’s complex in Peoria, Arizona.
“He’s officially signed,” Dipoto said.
