The Fernando Rodney era appears to finally be over in Seattle.
The Mariners designated their embattled former closer for assignment after Saturday night's 6-3 loss to the Chicago White Sox. They also optioned fellow right-handed reliever Danny Farquhar to Triple-A Tacoma.
Left-handed starter Roenis Elias and right-handed reliever Logan Kensing have been promoted from Tacoma and will join the team before Sunday's series finale with Chicago.
Rodney, 38, enjoyed a successful debut campaign with the Mariners in 2014, leading the league with 48 saves and making the All-Star team. Always known for making the ninth inning interesting, though, Rodney's increasing inconsistency led to him being removed from the closer role earlier this season.
