Mariners claim infielder Michael Freeman off of waivers, designated Patrick Kivlehan for assignment

The Mariners made a minor roster move in the hours leading up to the Major League Baseball non-waiver trade deadline, claiming infielder Michael Freeman off waivers from the Diamondbacks. To make room on the 40-man roster, outfielder Patrick Kivlehan was designated for assignment.

Freeman, who turns 29 on August 4, was hitting .317 (108-for-341) with 17 doubles, six triples, a homer, 24 RBI and .387 on-base percentage for Class AAA Reno this season. He’s played mostly second base this season, but also played in all three outfield positions and some first base. He was originally an 11th round draft pick out of Clemson in 2010.
