SAN DIEGO -- The Mariners arrived in San Diego Tuesday eager to make the most of a two-game Interleague series before heading up to Oakland for a far more pivotal four-game series.
They fell quite short in their first attempt, however, losing to the Padres 2-1. They also lost more ground in their playoff push, as the A's defeated the Astros, 4-3, in Houston. With Houston's loss and Oakland's win, the Mariners fell to 6 1/2 games back in the American League West behind the Astros and five games behind the A's for the second Wild Card spot.
