Mariners call up RHP Joe Wieland, designate OF Daniel Robertson for assignment

The Seattle Mariners on Friday selected right-hand pitcher Joe Wieland from Class AAA Tacoma and announced him as the starter for Friday’s game against the Athletics in Oakland.

Wieland fills the spot on Seattle’s 25-man roster vacated by right-hander Jarrett Grube, whom the Mariners optioned to the Rainiers on Wednesday. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Mariners designated outfielder Daniel Robertson for assignment.

Wieland, 26, will match up against A’s starter Sean Manaea when the teams face off at 7:05 p.m. Friday at Oakland Coliseum. It will be Wieland’s first appearance for Seattle after being acquired by the Mariners in January from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for infielder Erick Mejia.
