Mariners call up hard-throwing reliever Thyago Vieira

The Mariners added a reliever who can throw 100 miles per hour to their bullpen on Monday in 24-year-old Thyago Vieira. They also added a pitcher with a rather interesting nickname.

“Big Sweat is in the house,” Mariners manager Scott Servais said. “That’s what he was nicknamed in spring training. He sweats a lot. So we nicknamed him Big Sweat.”

Vieira is one of the Mariners’ most interesting prospects, if for no other reason than he can throw a baseball really, really hard. At the Futures Game in July, Vieira threw 16 fastballs. Only one of them was clocked under 99 mph.
