Outfielder James Jones was optioned back to Tacoma to open a spot on the 25-man roster.
Gutierrez, 32, hit .317 with seven home runs, 31 RBIs and a .902 OPS in 48 games for Tacoma after not playing at all in 2014 while dealing with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a nerve condition that has affected him the last several years.
Gutierrez was a Gold Glove center fielder for the Mariners in 2010, but he has played primarily left field and designated hitter this season for Tacoma.
Gutierrez has appeared in 762 Major League games with the Indians (2005-08) and Mariners (2009-13).
