The Mariners hired Jerry Dipoto as the general manager, signaling a departure from Zduriencik’s slugging-focused roster philosophy and ushering in the era of statistical analysis and sabermetrics. Formerly with the Los Angeles Angels, Dipoto quickly got to work overhauling Seattle’s big-league roster and minor-league system.
