ARLINGTON, Texas — Seattle Mariners outfielder Julio Rodríguez has been named American League Rookie of the Month for May. It is the first monthly award in Rodríguez’s career.
The 21-year-old is the youngest Mariners player to win the award.
Rodríguez becomes the 5th different Mariners player to win Rookie of the Month (8th instance). He joins Ichiro Suzuki (4x in 2001), Rafael Soriano (Aug. 2003), Michael Pineda (April 2011) and Mike Carp (Aug. 2011) as Mariners to win Rookie of the Month.
Rodríguez began his month by hitting his first Major League home run on May 1 at Miami, a 450-foot blast that remains the longest homer by a Mariners player this season.
