Upon being hired as the Mariners general manager last September, Jerry Dipoto vowed to make the Mariners more athletic and better defensively in an effort to perform better at Safeco Field.
Nowhere in that opening manifesto was there any mention of a lineup of power hitters that at any moment could change the course of the game.
But hitting home runs works OK, too.
On Wednesday, it was catcher Chris Iannetta providing the walk-off solo shot in a 6-5, 11-inning win over the Rays at Safeco Field. The victory capped a three-game sweep and pushed the first-place Mariners to 21-13 heading into Thursday's off-day.
