Gnome Stories - Gnome Shoppe (2024)

SACAJAWEA #5161 (July, 1991) Sacajawea was the first Indian woman reported to have crossed the Rocky Mountains from the plains of the United States. As a member of the Shoshone Tribe, she was chosen to lead the expedition of Lewis & Clark in their search for a route to the Pacific Ocean. With her son, Little Pomp, on her back, she rode in the first canoe during the hard going on the Missouri River. When other Indian tribes saw her at the front of the caravan, they recognized that this was a mission of peace, for no warriors would put a woman and child at the head of their group if they were intent on war.
