In a town without a stoplight, the disparities between low-income and high-income families play out every day — especially for children and young people.
“We don’t have athletics in our clubs because every single affluent kid in the community plays AAU sports. They travel, they have the nicest uniforms. You would never guess that they come from a community like ours,” says Jamie Sluys, director of the Boys & Girls Club of Brewster, Washington. “But that being said, there’s a whole demographic of kids who have no opportunity to play.”
Providing more opportunities for all kids to play sports is exactly what Sluys hopes to achieve.
