From Kibbutz Gezer to MLB: Alon Leichman’s Baseball Journey

The State of Israel is known for many things, like ancient archeological wonders, sacred holy sites, beautiful beaches, and delicious food, but baseball isn’t one of them. And yet, the Mariners are one of just a few teams in history to hire an Israeli to help coach one of their teams in the farm system. How did it happen that Alon Leichman grew up in Israel, but is now 7,500 miles across the world, in Modesto, California, as the pitching coach for the Mariners’ Single-A affiliate?

I recently returned from a study abroad program in Israel (unfortunately earlier than anticipated due to the current circumstances), but I can tell you I experienced an incredibly vibrant and exciting culture, and I was amazed by the people, the food, the landscape, and so much more.
