Former Mariner Willie Bloomquist announces retirement

Willie Ballgame has played his last ballgame.

Willie Bloomquist, who didn’t find a team after being released by the Mariners last July, announced his retirement Friday.

Bloomquist, 38, is a graduate of Port Orchard High School in South Kitsap. He played 14 seasons in the majors, including two stints with Seattle from 2002-08 and 2014-15. He also played for the Royals, Reds and Diamondbacks, and he finished with a career .269 average in 1,055 games.

On Friday afternoon, Bloomquist tweeted,”Make your last swing your BEST swing. Farewell u202a@MLB. Thank you for 14 amazing seasons.
