For Mariners draftees, pro career begins with minicamp in Peoria

For players taken in the MLB Draft, it’s the culmination of years of hard work—countless hours on the field, in the weight room, on bus rides and in batting cages. So you’d think after receiving that call, you get some time to celebrate, to pause and reflect on how far you’ve made it.

Not so much.

The Everett Aquasox, the short-season A-ball team laden with 2019 draftees, open their season tonight in the Tri-Cities. But before that, all players set to sign made a trip down to Arizona for minicamp at the Peoria Sports Complex and all the formalities that come with joining a Major League organization—plus other items that are a little less obvious.
