Daniel Lyon Jr., who was badly burned in last year’s Twisp River blaze, will be among those honored Sunday during the Seattle Mariners’ 11th annual Firefighter Appreciation Day at Safeco Field.
Lyon, 26, survived a wildland fire that killed three fellow U.S. Forest Service firefighters on Aug. 19, 2015. He’ll be joined by Bill Coultas, 52, a helicopter pilot who survived the “Iron 44” helicopter crash in Northern California’s Trinity Alps Wilderness in 2008. That accident killed nine crew members.
Lyon said he asked Coultas, who has become a friend and mentor, to throw out the first pitch.
