Edwin Díaz earned his 50th save of the season Saturday night, preserving yet another 1-run lead in the Mariners 4–3, 10-inning win at Arizona. Edwin joined an exclusive group of pitchers with his 50th save, becoming the 14th pitcher in Major League history to reach that milestone in a season and only the 2nd pitcher ever with at least 50 saves and 100 strikeouts. And there’s still more than a month to play.
Díaz joins Eric Gagne as the only pitchers to record 50 saves and 100 strikeouts in a season. Gagne accomplished this feat in back-to-back years for the Dodgers, including in 2003 when he won the National League Cy Young Award.
