It’s the time of year when our social media feeds are full of “back to school” pics: kids wearing their new school clothes armed with bulging backpacks, brandishing lunchboxes stuffed with healthy snacks. But for the 20% of children in this country who live in poverty, back-to-school time means families stressing over long lists of supplies, secondhand clothes and free school lunch, which often makes poorer kids a target for bullying. Research conducted at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health shows that children are over-represented in poverty statistics: they make up just a quarter of the U.
