After 22-and-a-half seasons, the Mariners bid farewell to the Kingdome with a 5–2 win over the Texas Rangers on June 27, 1999. The star of the show that afternoon was the man who played more games in the Kingdome than any other player — Ken Griffey Jr.
In the top of the 1st inning, Tom Goodwin singled and Rusty Greer homered off Freddy García, and the Mariners faced a 2–0 deficit before they came to bat — but they did not trail for long.
After Brian Hunter singled and Alex Rodriguez drew a walk, Griffey belted a 3-run home run off Aaron Sele — his 198th career home run in the Kingdome.
