On this day in 2001, John Olerud became the third Mariner in club history to hit for the cycle. With a 4-for-5 performance in the Mariners 9–2 win over the Padres at Qualcomm Stadium, Olerud joined Jay Buhner and Alex Rodriguez as the only Mariners to hit for the cycle.
Adrián Beltré later joined the group in 2008.
It marked the second time in Olerud’s career that he hit for the cycle, as he also did so with the Mets on September 11, 1997 vs. the Expos.
Olerud doubled to lead off the top of 2nd against Padres starter Carlton Loewer and tripled off Loewer to start the 3rd.
