The first Mariners game in club history was played on April 6, 1977, in front of a sellout crowd of 57,762. In a historic twist, Diego Segui was the opening night starter for the Mariners. On October 1st, 1969, Segui pitched the 9th inning of what would be the final game in Seattle Pilots history.
Good evening, everybody, and welcome to the initial voyage of the Seattle Mariners. Diego Segui, the first pitch in history is a strike, taken at the knees by Jerry Remy leading it off. And the crowd roars, and the plate umpire Bill Haller will toss the first ball thrown by Diego Segui down to Bill Stein, who will go over and hand it to the owner’s box here.
