On April 29, 1986, the Mariners were on the wrong side of one of the single greatest pitching performances in a regular season game ever — and Seattle still almost came out victorious.
On that night at Fenway Park in Boston, Red Sox right-hander Roger Clemens became the first pitcher in baseball history to record 20 strikeouts in a 9-inning game. Yet after six-and-a-half innings, he was on the losing side.
In the top of the 7th inning, Mariners DH Gorman Thomas broke a scoreless tie by belting a solo home run — one of three hits yielded by Clemens in a complete game effort.
