PEORIA, Ariz. — The Mariners fell to the Padres by a score of 12–4 today at Peoria Stadium. Luis Castillo made his second start of the spring, racking up 3 strikeouts over 2.0+ innings of work.
Cade Marlowe gave the Mariners an early lead with a 2-run blast onto the berm in right-center field in the top of the second inning.
San Diego countered with a 3-run bottom of the third inning, punctuated with a 2-run blast by Fernando Tatis Jr. that put the Padres ahead 3–2.
The Padres added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, but the Mariners answered by manufacturing a run of their own in the top of the fifth to trim the Padres lead to 5–3.
