A 12-year-old boy who threw a missile at a police van and a grandfather who 'barrelled' into an officer 'like a rhinoceros' are among the latest thugs to face justice over Britain's summer of riots.

Courts were once again packed with offenders today as judges continued to hand down prison sentences to punish the violence which has exploded across the country in recent days.

The 12-year-old, one of two children charged over the scenes, admitted throwing a missile at a police van and taking part in two separate incidents of disorder in Manchester.

The boy pleaded guilty to two charges of violent disorder at Manchester Magistrates' Court, sitting as a youth court, on Monday afternoon.
