ASHEVILLE - After a weeklong trial and two hours of deliberation, a Superior Court jury found self-described leftist Asheville Blade journalists Matilda Bliss and Veronica Coit guilty of misdemeanor second-degree trespass.

They were each sentenced to pay $100 plus court fines. Immediately after the June 16 verdict, defense attorney Ben Scalesentered a notice of appeal on both cases. The next stop for the case will be the North Carolina Court of Appeals.

Buncombe County Superior Court Judge Tommy Davis told attorneys earlier in the week that the jury would be limited to considering whether the reporters violated a city park ordinance.
