Arizona scraps plan to rename freeway honoring soldier for Randy Johnson

PHOENIX (AP) - An Arizona freeway named after a soldier killed in the Iraq war won't be temporarily rebranded to honor soon-to-be baseball Hall of Famer Randy Johnson.

Organizers decided to scrap a celebration planned for Friday to temporarily post signs on State Route 51 to honor Johnson - who wore the number "51" while playing for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Gov. Doug Ducey had planned to attend.

The Diamondbacks announced the cancellation in a news release late Tuesday, saying concerns expressed by Pfc. Lori Piestewa's family were understandable.

The Diamondbacks said none of the organizers wanted to pursue the rebranding - which was set to last three weeks.
