After a couple days of speculation about his future, first baseman/designated hitter Jesus Montero was claimed off waivers by the Blue Jays on Monday in what marked the official end of his failed Mariners tenure.
Montero was designated for assignment over the weekend after losing the backup first base/platoon job to Korean slugger Dae-Ho Lee. With looming concerns over his defense, Montero needed to show the new regime headed by general manager Jerry Dipoto and manager Scott Servais that he was ready to finally live up to his potential.
Instead, he batted .237 (9-for-38) with two doubles, no homers and four RBIs in 21 games this spring.
