It doesn’t get any better than Opening Night.
The Mariners opened their 43rd season with a 9–7 win over the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday night at the Tokyo Dome in Japan.
Making his first Opening Day start, Marco Gonzales turned in a quality outing, while Domingo Santana belted a grand slam home run and Tim Beckham added 3 hits, including a home run of his own.
The Mariners return to play Thursday in a 6:35 pm first pitch in Tokyo (2:35 am in Seattle). Yusei Kikuchi is slated to make his Major League debut on his native soil against A’s right-hander Marco Estrada.
