Edwin Díaz was the youngest player on the Mariners Opening Day roster when the club opened the season on April 3 at Houston. Throughout the 2017 campaign, the 23-year-old native of Puerto Rico continued his development as one of the top young relievers in the American League.
Díaz finished the 2017 season with 34 saves in 39 opportunities and 89 strikeouts in 66.0 innings pitched. His 34 saves were tied with Houston’s Ken Giles for 4th-most in the American League, trailing only Tampa Bay’s Alex Colome (47), Toronto’s Roberto Osuna (39) and Boston’s Craig Kimbrel (35).
