Santa Clara (7-23) jumped on Hornets starter Evan Gibbons (0-1) early, sending 10 batters to the plate in the first inning to score four runs. The big hit in the inning came from freshman third baseman Connor Henriques who doubled over the leftfielder's head to drive in two runs.
The Broncos added three more runs in the second to extend its lead to 7-0, on two Sacramento State errors and two hits against Jack Zalasky who came in to relieve of Gibbons in the first.
The right-handed Bernhardt (2-1) was sharp early, striking out five of the first six Hornet hitters, and pitched out of jams to finish his outing with four hits and two walks over five innings of work.
