But in a cruel twist of fate, Potter left the game with a left ankle injury on the first play of the second quarter, Joe Gray struggled in relief and the Spartans had to turn to third-stringer Malik Watson to finish off a 35-21 loss to Beavers before 34,573 at Reser Stadium.The Beavers (2-1) turned the game around with 21 straight points in the third quarter as San Jose State (1-2) let a winnable game slip from its grasp for the second straight week.
