Despite substantially outgaining the Auburn Tigers, San Jose State couldn't get out of its own way when it mattered, coughing up two fumbles and throwing a pair of interceptions in a 35-21 loss on a chilly, rainy day in Auburn on Saturday.
The Spartans fell to these same Tigers 59-13 last year. The Spartans consistently gave Auburn a short field, if not turnovers, then by special teams breakdowns. The Tigers returned a pair of kickoffs deep into San Jose State territory, giving their struggling offense an easier distance to work with. Quarterback Joe Gray finished 21 for 33 with 224 yards and a touchdown.
