San Jose State reinstates men's water polo

In a time of rising costs and expanding deficits, San Jose State is taking the unusual step of adding a sport — a men's sport, no less.

The Spartan water polo program, once one of the best in the nation, has been reinstated after a 34-year hiatus. The first match of the season is Saturday against Santa Clara at the SJSU Aquatics Center. The sport won't adversely impact SJSU's compliance with Title IX regulations because of the recent additions of women's track and field (indoor and outdoor) and women's beach volleyball, and it will be self-funded so as not to add to athletic department expenses.
