Former Major League Baseball Commissioner Peter Ueberroth returned to his alma mater Saturday night as San Jose State revived its Tower Award celebration, which had been dormant since 2008.
Ueberroth, who graduated from San Jose State in 1959, was presented with the award by one of his former classmates, former NFL coach Dick Vermeil. "It's one thing to be recognized for an award. It's another thing to deserve it," said Vermeil, who listed off Ueberroth's accomplishments in business and in the community, which included running the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. A water polo player while at SJSU, Ueberroth worked with his old teammates to revive the sport at San Jose State after 34 years in 2015 and recently received the NCAA's highest honor, the Theodore Roosevelt Award.
