SAN JOSE — With college football’s National Championship game being played in the South Bay Monday, let’s call it signature win.
If the NHL used a ranking system instead of standings, the Sharks would have shot themselves up the polls Saturday by pulling off the upset of the year, beating the league’s No. 1 team while playing without three starting defensemen.
In doing so, the Sharks reminded the hockey world why so many experts put them right in the mix with squads, such as the Tampa Bay Lightning, Washington Capitals and Winnipeg Jets in their preseason rankings.
