Takeaways: Sharks benefit from key return in Game 4 (not Joe Thornton)

SAN JOSE — After the Sharks Game 3 loss, head coach Pete DeBoer took solace in the fact that his team was continuing to improve with each game of their series against the Vegas Golden Knights.

The Sharks validated his claim by putting together their best performance in Game 4.

They contained the Knights speed, went 5-for-5 on the penalty kill and shut out the line of Reilly Smith, Jonathan Marchessault and William Karlsson, who’d collected a combined 12 even-strength points over the first three games of the series.

As a result, Martin Jones cruised to a relatively-easy 34-save shutout, the sixth of his postseason career.
