As Roy Sommer closes in on the American Hockey League record for coaching wins, the San Jose Barracuda’s main man has taken a wistful approach.
“It kind of catches up to you like old age. All of a sudden, it’s there. You look in the mirror and say, ‘Man, I’m old,’” Sommer said. “Then you look at the record and say, ‘That’s a lot of hockey.’”
Sommer, 58, isn’t all that old. Yet his self-deprecating analysis of catching Fred “Bun” Cook’s 636 career wins fits right in with how hockey types react to personal accomplishments.
