Sharks keeping first round draft pick in camp a bit longer

SAN JOSE — The Sharks, as expected, made cuts to their training camp roster Wednesday morning, sending 14 players back to the Barracuda of the AHL and two players back to junior hockey.

The one notable exception was defenseman Ryan Merkley, who has impressed the Sharks with his play during the preseason.

Merkley, selected 21st overall by the Sharks in June, had 21:57 of ice time on Tuesday — third most on the team — as the Sharks lost to the Calgary Flames 7-5.

Merkley assisted on Rourke Chartier’s power play goal in the first period and saw significant time on both the penalty kill and power play, as the Sharks dressed a lineup mostly made up of prospects.
