Sommer, an Oakland native, was a teenager honing his skills as a player in both the Alberta Junior Hockey League and the Western Canadian Hockey League more than 40 years ago.

Sommer, now 62, also scored his first and only NHL goal in 1981 as a member of the Edmonton Oilers, a team at the time that featured Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier and Paul Coffey, among others.
But it was a short lived stint in the NHL for Sommer, who played three games with the Oilers before he was returned by the club to the Wichita Wind of the Central Hockey League.
