Report: San Jose Sharks' Evander Kane files for bankruptcy, may opt out of NHL season

San Jose Sharks forward Evander Kane is $26.8 million in debt and recently filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, according to a report from The Athletic.

Kane, 29, was originally due $6 million for the upcoming NHL season, though that hasn't been adjusted for a reduction in games (there will only be 56, as opposed to 82). The filing further indicates Kane is unsure about playing at all in 2021: “Debtor may terminate his contract and he may opt out of the season, as allowed under current rules, because of health concerns given the recent birth of his first child.
