SAN JOSE — Jonathan Cheechoo had his named mentioned with some of the most prolific goal-scorers to ever play in the NHL for one magical stretch in the spring of 2006.
Every goal Cheechoo scored for the Sharks helped him keep pace with the likes of Jaromir Jagr, Ilya Kovalchuk and Alex Ovechkin. Almost overnight, he went from being a solid sniper to one the NHL’s elite, with the topic of whether he’d finish the season as the NHL’s leading goal scorer that year brought up on a near-daily basis.
For a relatively quiet young man from the small town of Moose Factory, Ontario, even with a few years of professional experience under his belt, this was a lot of get used to.
