Danny O’Regan was named the American Hockey League Rookie of the Year with two games remaining in the season. He currently leads all rookies with 56 points, 22 goals and 34 assists.
The Dudley (Red) Garrett Memorial Award is voted on by coaches, players and members of the media. Why it’s voted on before the season ends is beyond me, but who am I to quibble with a San Jose player getting an award?
It’s a close race in terms of points for rookies. O’Regan currently leads the class by just one. Mark Jankowski of the Stockton Heat (Flames) has 55 points in 63 games and Andrew Poturalski of the Charlotte Checkers (Hurricanes) has 51 points in 72 games.
