Jonathan Toews and Ryan Garbutt scored first-period goals and Corey Crawford made 39 saves as the visiting Chicago Blackhawks beat the Montreal Canadiens 2-1 on Thursday to extend their winning streak to nine games and move Joel Quenneville into sole possession of second place in career coaching victories.
Quenneville has 783 wins, one more than Al Arbour. Scotty Bowman (1,244) tops the all-time list.
“Scotty’s safe,” Quenneville quipped.
“It’s pretty amazing,” Toews said of Quenneville’s win total. “There’s been a lot of great coaches and the amount of wins he has is so rare.
