Barracuda advances past Heat with Carpenter’s OT winner

SAN JOSE — Ryan Carpenter played the hero Tuesday night for a San Jose Barracuda team was pushed to the brink by the Stockton Heat.

Carpenter scored a shorthanded goal at the 8:52 mark of the first overtime to lead the Barracuda to a dramatic 2-1 win over the Heat in a decisive Game 5 at SAP Center, giving San Jose a 3-2 series win.

Carpenter’s goal came off an assist from Barclay Goodrow, as he beat Heat goalie Jon Gillies on the Barracuda’s 54th shot of the game.

It was the Barracuda’s second shorthanded goal of the series after it had 14 shorthanded goals in the regular season.
