The Sharks picked Dylan Gambrell with their first selection of the 2016 NHL Draft, prompting some head scratching. Gambrell wasn’t the “best available” by any major scouting group, but the center seems to fit into the Doug Wilson mold.
He scored 47 points in 41 games in his freshman season with the University of Denver and is a two-way center that may end up being a decent 3C if things work out.
The Sharks have a bit of a reputation of making picks like this. It seems Wilson prefers to take guys with a higher floor, even if it means they come with a much lower ceiling.
